Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today. You can put an end to thick, unsightly hair, save time in your skincare routine, and avoid the fuss and discomfort of messy waxes and razors. While the word “laser” may seem intimidating, laser hair removal is simple, safe and causes minimal discomfort, leaving you with long-lasting, fuzz-free skin.

How it works

At Laser Bar & Spa, our expert team wants to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure. A staff member will first start by applying a cooling gel to your skin, to protect it from the laser. Targeting your hair at its root, laser treatments direct highly precise light energy into your skin, heating and ultimately destroying hair follicles. Most patients tolerate the laser treatment very well and describe feeling only a slight sting as the laser pulses over the skin.

Sessions are quick

Laser hair removal treatments are convenient enough to fit into even the busiest of schedules. Many times, people even squeeze in a session during their lunch break. Depending on the area of your body you’re targeting, your appointment can take as little as 15 minutes.

No recovery time necessary

After the procedure, the treated area might appear red or slightly irritated. The redness will gradually fade in a day or two. You’ll need to use sunscreen for a few weeks after your treatment sessions to protect your skin while it heals. However, you won’t be in any pain, and you can jump right back into your normal activities immediately after treatment. There’s no need to take time out of your schedule for recovery as with other types of cosmetic procedures.

Expect to come back a few times

The laser technology works only on actively growing hair follicles. Hair grows in phases, and not all of your hair grows at the same time. Follicles in the active growth phase have the highest amount of melanin — a substance that gives hair its color and readily absorbs the laser energy.

Follicles that are in a transition or resting phase do not absorb laser energy. You’ll need to return for a few sessions to catch those follicles in their growth stage.

You typically need at least four sessions to achieve the desired results, and sessions are usually about four weeks apart.

Results are immediate

While you’ll need those extra visits to get maximum results, you’ll still see a difference after the first session. You’ll notice that your hair growth slows down, and when it does grow, it will come in finer and lighter. Each session will further reduce hair growth until the hair growing from the damaged follicles falls out, leaving you with smooth skin.

Touch-ups are beneficial

It’s a good idea to stop by for touch-ups down the road. After your primary treatment sessions, it’s common to notice hair cropping up here and there. That’s because some hairs can remain in the resting phase for quite some time. As resting follicles turn active and start growing, touch-ups help ensure you get the smoothest possible result.

Prepping is easy

Skincare products may contain substances that react to the laser, so ditch them on the day of your appointment. Skip lotions, creams, and even sunscreen. The goal is to have clean skin that’s free of these products so the laser works effectively.

Typically, you’ll want to shave a day or two before your session and avoid waxing or tweezing within three weeks of your appointment.
