The Science Behind Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is the sixth most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. Both men and women get laser hair removal, and it can be performed on legs, arms, chest, back, face, and other areas of your body safely.

At Laser Bar and Spa in Herald Square, Midtown, New York, our expert esthetic providers can help you get rid of unwanted hair by using a state-of-the-art Cynosure® laser hair removal system.  It's the fast, easy way to get smooth, soft, hair-free skin.

How laser hair removal works

Each of your hairs grows out of a follicle, where the hair root is attached. When a hair falls out, the follicle generates a new hair. If the follicle is damaged, a new hair can’t grow. Most types of hair removal don’t reach the follicle, and simply remove the hair that is above the skin. With laser hair removal, the follicle is very slightly damaged, making it unable to continue growing hairs.

Laser hair removal starts with a laser that sends a beam of high-intensity light at the area of your body being treated. The light hits the individual hairs, and turns into heat energy. The heat energy travels quickly down the hair into the follicle, damaging the follicle slightly. The hair itself falls out, and the follicle will become dormant. A single laser hair removal treatment can provide up to a 25% reduction in hair regrowth.

The science of the hair growth cycles

It can take around six treatments for your laser hair removal treatment to be complete, meaning you’ll need little or no maintenance going forward. That’s because each treatment only manages to affect a certain percentage of your hair follicles.

There are three stages of the hair growth cycle

Most hairs are in anagen phase, which is also the phase that lasts the longest, at any given time. Laser treatment only affects these hairs, so you’ll have to have several treatments to catch all hairs in anagen phase. Also, some people’s hair follicles heal better than others, so it can take repeated treatments to reach a point where hair won’t grow back.
